Mahadasha durations
The traditional full durations are fixed within the Vimshottari system, but the first Mahadasha shown from birth may be shorter because only its remaining balance is active.

What a Mahadasha does and does not tell you
In Jyotish interpretation, the Mahadasha ruler becomes an important timing influence, but its results are not read from the planet's name alone. Its sign, house ownership, natal placement, relationships and divisional-chart context all matter.
This is why two people in the same planetary Mahadasha can experience very different themes.
Why Antardasha matters
Every Mahadasha contains all nine planetary Antardashas. The active Antardasha changes the immediate combination, so a long Mahadasha can contain very different phases.
Kya Kare therefore shows the active path rather than presenting only the Mahadasha ruler.
