Mahadasha vs Antardasha vs Pratyantardasha, Sookshma and Prana

Compare all five Vimshottari Dasha levels, their nested order, how timelines are calculated and what shorter periods can and cannot mean.

Why are there five nested Dasha levels?

Each planetary period is proportionally subdivided into a repeating nine-planet sequence. A Prana period sits within a Sookshma period, which sits inside a Pratyantara, Antardasha and Mahadasha.

How is the duration determined?

The parent duration is multiplied by the sub-period ruler's Vimshottari years divided by 120. The 120-year sequence uses Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17.

Which level should I interpret first?

Read the Mahadasha lord and Antardasha lord first, then assess deeper subperiods within that context. Planetary dignity, functional house rulership and chart connections affect traditional interpretations.

Why do dates differ by hours or days?

Precise birth time, provider conventions, ayanamsa, calculation of year length, rounding and time-zone display all matter. Compare source boundaries before declaring one Prana date correct.

Frequently asked questions

How can I find my current Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha?

Vimshottari Dasha starts from the Moon's birth Nakshatra. A calculator uses birth date, accurate time, location and a defined ayanamsa to produce the Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha, Sookshma and Prana date ranges. Check the calculation settings when websites disagree.

Are Shani, Rahu or Ketu Dashas always negative?

No. Traditional interpretations consider the planet's house placement, dignity, lordship, aspects, conjunctions and the running sub-periods. Saturn may symbolize discipline, Rahu unusual opportunities and Ketu detachment; none guarantees a good or bad event.

Use astrology as context, not certainty

Jyotish is interpretive. A chart or Dasha period does not guarantee a particular life event. Important decisions should also use real-world evidence and appropriate professional advice.
